Montgomery County welcomed new District 5910 Governor Amy Kilgore to our fine region the beginning of August for a “Collaborative Governor’s Visit,” something new she’s launched during her year as leader of our district.

The Woodlands Rotary Club welcomed three area clubs – Conroe, Lake Conroe and Magnolia – to their home base at The Woodlands Conference Center for the luncheon.  Governor Amy brought with her greetings from Rotary International President Gordon McInally and his theme for 2023-24, “Create Hope In The World”. President Gordon aims to put a greater focus on mental health for his term, asking us to help him “erase the stigma, raise awareness and improve mental health services”.  The four clubs in attendance thank Governor Amy for her enthusiasm and devotion to the work of Rotary and our District.

The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County enjoyed an important presentation by Dr Charlie Campbell last week, as he spoke on “Functional Medicine and Living Your Best Life”.  Functional Medicine is a “biology bases approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. ..There is a silent epidemic, a nutritional deficiency, that recent research has shown could shorten your life by as much as 4.7 years.”  The club listened intently to Dr Campbell and really appreciated his talk.

I had the pleasure of visiting my former club, Lake Conroe, to present my power point on the Rotary International Conference in Melbourne last May. We laughed our way through technical issues that forced us to view the slides in random order with no idea of which slide would appear next. This was definitely a make-it-up-as-you-go-along presentation.  Club members were good natured and I appreciated their understanding.  The presentation itself was a bit of a mess, but the message, I hope, was still clear – attending a International Convention opens your eyes to the wonder and scope of Rotary. We hear about these global projects, we donate to Polio and Water Well Projects, but at a convention you see things first hand, you get to know the people who make things happen, and you meet people whose lives have been changed by the work of Rotary. A convention like this changes you as a Rotarian.

The convention in 2024 is in Singapore. Not an easy trip for Texans to make. But in 2025, Calgary, Canada will host us. Calgary is an easy plane ride away, and it’s one of the most beautiful and hospitable cities in the world. Think about it Rotarians! It would be A Beautiful Thing!
