Steaming this week on Amazon Prime is this comedy which tells the story of a reformed criminal (Josh Brolin) who just wants to work a real job and raise his family when his twin brother (Peter Dinklage) gets out of prison and goes straight to recruiting his twin for a big score.  He decides to do it, as it is just too hard to say no to his brother, but the job becomes increasingly difficult when their criminal mother (Glenn Close) and a corrupt prison guard (Brendan Fraser) get in the way.  Very much unlike the 80’s film Twins, which was only about the differences between the brothers, this film barely scratches the surface of the obvious and leans right into the world of two brothers who are unalike in ways that don’t involve height.  So instead of the jokes that could have been thrown at us, the film manages to take a subtler entry to comedy, and there are some good laughs here.  Making the laughs work is a really good cast filled with Oscar winners and near-Oscar winners.  The story is good enough to entertain and the performances, while very over-the-top, don’t disappoint.  Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of meat on the bone here and the movie never really hits a high as it tries to get through the story that doesn’t know what to do with itself.  There are some good ideas and some very weird moments that you won’t see coming, but it never develops into the comedy it’s trying to be.  The good news is that at less than 90 minutes, it’s not in the least bit painful to sit through.  C+
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some strong language
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

When most of us think of Superman, we think of the 70’s movies that still hold up well today (at least the first two).  This documentary tells the story of the life of Christopher Reeve and how he went from a nobody actor to the Man of Steel, followed by his fateful tragedy that left him completely paralyzed from the neck down.  Not only is his story fascinating and his journey captivating, but he also leaves a legacy that is inspiring.  I do have to issue a huge warning that this pic is a real tearjerker, and you will be helpless to ignore the emotions that will flood in.  But even with all the sadness and misfortune, it is highly unlikely that you will walk away without feeling hope and inspiration which comes from watching someone make the most out of a personal and very public tribulation.  A-
