Coushatti Trace Chapter Sponsors Constitution Week Poster Contest Entry
Gertrude S. Carraway, Past President General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), played a key role in establishing the annual observance of Constitution Week from September 17-23. Following President Eisenhower’s proclamation on August 19, 1955, the first official Constitution Week celebration took place that year. Due to its success, President Eisenhower later designated September 17-23 as Constitution Week every year, starting on January 5, 1956.
In honor of this important week, the Coushatti Trace Chapter, NSDAR, organized skits at several local schools, including Willis and Montgomery elementary schools, as well as for the American Heritage Girls Troop. The students were also encouraged to create Constitution Week posters to be submitted to the Texas State DAR for consideration in the NSDAR’s national contest where the winner’s poster will be published as the official 2025 Constitution Week NSDAR poster in the Spring of 2025.
Among the participants, 11-year-old Lucy Wall, a member of the American Heritage Girls Troop #1722, was submitted by the chapter for the Constitution Week Poster Contest. Homeschooled and passionate about reading, dinosaurs, and caring for her pet parakeets and chickens, Lucy’s poster was chosen for its creativity and strong representation of the spirit of Constitution Week.
