The R100 National Archery Tour will stop in Conroe in April, bringing along a returning veteran who is one of the sport’s best.

The 2025 R100 Conroe event April 11-13 at Owen Park marks the return to the sport for Terry Ragsdale, 67, who is regarded as the greatest bowmen of all time.

Here’s what to know about the tour and its stop in Conroe.

HALL OF FAMER: Conroe archer Toby Ragsdale joins father, brother in Texas Field Archery Association hall of fame

What is the R100 archery tour?

The R100 is a family-friendly 3D archery circuit that hosts R100 events across the county. The only other Texas stop for 2025 is in Amarillo.

Greg Wells, assistant director of programs for Conroe’s Community Development Department, is an avid archer and participates in this tour each year with his sons.

“It’s a fun time with your friends and family and you’re shooting targets you don’t find on any other archery tournament platform,” Wells said.

You can register for the tournament at the R100 website.

The ‘First Family of Archery’

Wells calls Terry Ragsdale the “Michael Jordan of archery.”

The Ragsdale family is well known among archers, starting with Terry’s father, Bob Ragsdale. He is a Conroe resident, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and is regarded as a trailblazer in the sport of archery.

The Conroe City Council named Thursday “Bob Ragsdale Day” in the city. Both of Bob Ragsdale’s sons, Terry and Toby, became stars of the sport.

“Terry is arguably the best archer to ever hold a bow in his hand,” Toby said as he was named to the Texas Field Archery Hall of Fame in 2024. “He was the first person to shoot the perfect indoor round. He was the first person to shoot the first outdoor round.”

Toby Ragsdale teaches archery classes at Saddle River Range in Conroe.

“Speaking as an archer this is like getting to meet Babe Ruth or Hakeem Olajuwon,” Wells said. “Even if I wasn’t involved in R100, I would come to this tournament to say I shot in the same tournament as Terry Ragsdale.”

WESTSIDE PARK CLOSURE: Conroe to shutter former YMCA building as it considers options for site in flood zone

What it means for Owen Park

Activities will take place at Owen Park, 10245 Owen Drive. Events are from noon to 8 p.m. April 11, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 12 and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13.

The city’s Westside Recreation Center at Owen Park closed in December but the park and its amenities including fishing, hiking trails and the pavilion remain open.

Wells likens the archery courses to disc golf or regular golf where the shooter walks down the trail to each shooting station.

“The targets are three dimensional game-looking targets like deer, elk, bison and more,” he said. “The North American Range features animals you’d find in North America, like moose, white-tailed deer etc. The Safari Range is everything else including dinosaurs, African and Asian game animals, a Yeti, a Great White Shark and cobras.”

It is Wells’ hope to eventually use space at Owen Park for a city archery range.
