The Conroe Noon Lions Club hopes that there are still some citizens of Conroe whom the recent weather has not melted.  If you are lucky enough to have found shelter inside your refrigerator or in the fountain of the nearest golf course pond, we are happy you are able to read our club updates in a semi-solid state.

Service Saturday is coming up on Sept. 16 from 8 a.m. to noon at Family Promise. Lions will spend the morning painting, among some other needed jobs. Don’t worry Lions. All painting will be done indoors. Speaking of air conditioning, Reading at Reaves is Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon.  There are still time slots available, so don’t miss your chance to sign up to work this fun event. It is a great opportunity to share your favorite children’s literature with some appreciative kiddos. Speaking from personal experience, if you choose the pre-k class, come prepared with silly voices.

It is now that time of year when Lions search for our Hometown Military Hero. Each year the CNLC selects a service member to celebrate all year long. Applications are open to all active-duty service personnel from the area and are due on Sept. 30.  Applications are available from club members or the club office.

At the week’s meeting, the Conroe Noon Lions tackled some heavy subject matter. Lion Judge Wayne L. Mack presented on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Judge Mack gave a practical break down of risk factors, warning signs, and what a family member or friend can do when faced with a suicidal person in their life (visit afsp.org for more information). Judge Mack says people often ask him why suicide happens. He answers, “What I’ve learned in the process…the why it’s happening is because of people not having meaning or purpose and being lonely. We’ve become very independent.” What does he offer in way of a solution? Judge Mack goes to his faith with a quote from Genesis: It is not good for man to be alone. He says we need a culture where it is acceptable to say, “I’m not okay,” and we need people willing to ask others “Are you okay?” I think all Lions present would join me in thanking Judge Mack for leading us through such a tough topic with compassion, expertise, and hope.

The Lions gave a big welcome this week to Lillian Molina, the new club assistant! We wish her congratulations, luck in her new position, and perhaps a good pair of ear plugs so she doesn’t have to endure our singing each week.

A massive thank you from the Conroe Noon Lions Club to all of those who signed up to be Community Partners for the 2023-2024 club year!  Each time a pair of eyeglasses helps someone to see, a Christmas basket feeds a hungry neighbor, or a child smiles as they catch their first fish at Kids on the Lake, our community partners are right there with us making it happen. Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
