As the kids go back to school and we wind up our summer activities, the Conroe Noon Lions are gearing up for a busy year.Â
Congratulations to Lion Shelia Thomas for being selected as ‘Lion of the Month’ for July.  Shelia keeps busy on many of our committees and has been a dedicated volunteer and supporter of the Texas Lions Camp.  Lion Jason Gilchrist was awarded an official blue badge after completing a number of club activities.  Great job, Jason!
One of the biggest projects of the year is the Community Partner campaign. Â
This program was started by Past International Director, the late Don Buckalew, and past District Governor, Glen Starr in 2006.  It has become our most successful fundraiser as it allows community members and local businesses to support the Lions Club and participate in many of our activities with one yearly donation.  Memberships are available from $500-$2500 and due by Sept. 1. Â
For more information contact our Lions Club office at 936-760-1666.
Our committee chairs will be meeting at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31Â at our club office. Â Past President Scott Perry will be providing some valuable training on how to make it a great year for all of our committees!Â
Our monthly Service Saturday projects continue with a pizza and ice cream social at Havenwood Senior Apartments from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 26. Service Saturday projects are a great way to get involved, meet new Lions, and just share in the experience of a hands-on community service project.
And finally, our Leo Club Committee is busy, getting organized and looking for recruits around the community. The Leo Club is for high school age students, and this year we are organizing a community wide club to include Conroe High, private schools, and homeschoolers.
If you would like to be involved with this committee, you can come to the planning meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at our Lions Club office.Â
Our program last week was presented by Megan Ballard Arthur, Public Information Officer for the Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
MCOHSEM provides disaster relief for natural, man-made, and technological disasters and consists of 4 divisions: prepare, respond, recovery, and mitigation. MCOHSEM has 56 plans throughout the county that are continuously being updated. Volunteers are needed for the Certified Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). Training is provided. Â These groups work with first responders from all over the county in training exercises to prepare for disasters.
Â
You and your family can prepare for a disaster by creating a disaster plan, building an emergency kit with 3 days’ worth of supplies, and staying informed from reputable sources. To help be prepared, make sure emergency alerts are turned on your cell phone and register your household with Smart 911.Â
