Sometimes even Lions like to have fun! This past week the Conroe Noon Lions celebrated recent community service events while playing a team-building game called “Shake It Up” – telling the story of ‘Our Summer Vacation.”
Lion Helen Thornton and her Membership Services team to together a game for fellow Lions to learn more about each other and increase the camaraderie among the membership. Shall we say it was rather revealing? There were stories of foreign countries, mishaps in hotels, eating crickets, and flying paper airplanes. It was a very fun way to build teamwork.
Some of the good news we received was that the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville for disabled children was safe and sound during the flood disaster in Kerrville. The kids and the families staying at the camp were high and dry and not harmed. The camp also stepped in to help house some relief effort workers and supplies. Conroe Noon donated to the Kerrville Host Lion Club Flood Relief fund. As did Lions Clubs International with a $100,000 emergency grant. In addition to our money, we also sent our prayers to the families who have suffered such horrible losses.
Our latest project brought Lions together for a Vision Screening at the Community Assistant Center. It was reported that one participant couldn’t even read the big “E” on the top of the eye chart! You see there is an urgent need right here in Conroe. That’s why as part of our Service Saturday project 28 members gathered to clean, sort and repair used eyeglasses that are received from all over the area. Lions have repaired and issued over one million pairs of eyeglasses through the club’s Eyeglass Recycling Center — Whoa!!
And the Lions didn’t stop there. We even gave our blood this past week to the Gulf Coast Blood Center. Blood Drive Chair Bobby Brennan lined up members to donate blood because this time of year is typically the time when “deposits” are the low for the blood bank. Our motto is “We Serve,” but we also give.
Speaking of giving, it’s that time of year again — back to school. Lions are collecting school supplies and goodies for the kids at our Adopted School – Reaves Elementary and their teachers. We accept donations which can be made to any Lion or to the office on Wilson Road here in Conroe. Everything we have collected by August 6th will be sorted out and presented at our next Service Saturday, which will be at the school on August 9th. Let’s get those kids ready to learn!
Please come and join us any Wednesday at noon. The food is good, and the fellowship is great! The Conroe Noon Lions Club meets on Wednesdays, at noon, NORMALLY at the Lone Star Convention Center. BUT, special note to Ricky Morton: this week only we are meeting at the Fairgrounds for lunch!
