Greetings to all Lions and readers. August has been a busy month for the Lions. So far, we have had a blood drive collecting forty-four units and provided a sizable amount of school supplies for students and teachers at Reaves Elementary School. But wait, there’s more. We will have our monthly Service Saturday project at Havenwood Senior Living on August 26. Lions will provide refreshments and activities for residents. Sounds like the committee is preparing a domino throwdown and some rug cuttin’ dance moves for all to enjoy.
Our Leo Club is in the formative stages for the 2023-2024 school year. Did I hear you say- what is a Leo Club? Glad you asked. Leo Club is a service club for high schoolers. Conroe Noon Lions Club sponsors and provides guidance to the club to learn and perform service projects in their community. Membership is open to all public, private, and homeschool students in the Conroe area. Lions Morgan Freeman and Hannah Medley are a couple of Lion hipsters leading the charge, and you can meet them and learn more at an informational meeting on August 29, 6:00pm, at the CNLC office located at 1106 Wilson Road. You can also call 936-760-1666.
August is also THE month for our Community Partner campaign. Our partner’s program is the backbone of our community service and charity programs. Allow me to mention a few-over a dozen scholarships awarded to high school students through several speech and writing contests, Leo club, Texas Lions Camp maintenance and activity sponsorship, Hometown Military Hero, Christmas baskets for seniors and shut-ins, Service Saturday projects, Montgomery County Fair, Spring Style Show, Vision Screening; and the operation of our Eyeglass Recycling Center providing eyewear to for medical mission trips. There are four levels of participation to choose from- Knights of the Blind ($2,500), Guiding Light ($1,500), Vision Ambassador ($1,000), and Sight Saver ($500). Each level provides opportunities to participate in Conroe Noon Lions Club events throughout the year- Dinner-Dance & Auction, Clay Shoot, Golf Tournament, Lucky Derby Raffle, the Partner Appreciation Luncheon, and advertising on multiple avenues. The campaign is a great way to get involved in the local community. Deadline to participate is August 31.
This past Wednesday I had the honor of introducing our guest speaker, United States Congressman Morgan Luttrell. I usually break the ice with a couple jokes and had planned to go political. I changed course to farm jokes when I considered I was a Boy Scout and Mr. Luttrell was a Navy Seal. Mr. Luttrell represents us in District 8 and is in his first term following Kevin Brady’s retirement. He’s hit the ground running in our nation’s capital. Our congressman shared with Lions there is an urgency for our country to be highly concerned with cyber security. He stated- “every day, every hour, every minute, every second to the millisecond there is an attack on personal accounts, businesses, financial institutions and government.” “They’re coming at us from all over the world.” Mr. Luttrell made two suggestions to increase your cyber security- first have a two-point authentication on all your online accounts; second, if you travel overseas, use a burner phone. As soon as you are on foreign soil there is a high probability your phone is compromised to cyber-crime, and when you return home, you bring it with you and compromise your contacts. Our congressman gave some time for Q&A at the conclusion and naturally the questions gravitated to the approaching presidential election, border security and so on. He closed by stating “Montgomery County is a beacon on the hill.” Thank you congressman Luttrell for your time and efforts representing us in District 8.
Remember Lions, our Club President, Lion Jason Miller’s mantra for the year- “we don’t have to, we get to.” If you are not a Lion but are looking for an organization that embodies “We Serve,” then visit on Wednesdays, noon, at the Lone Star Convention Center.
