A Conroe High School tradition roared back into downtown Conroe this week.

The school’s annual homecoming parade and pep rally returned downtown on Wednesday night after taking place on the Conroe High campus for several years.

Conroe High School principal RoTasha Smith said construction at the high school campus brought the parade back downtown.

“The construction forced the parade back downtown and we’re so excited to be back,” Smith told those gathered for the pep rally at Heritage Place Park.

The event was held in advance of Conroe’s game against Caney Creek High School Friday night at Moorhead Stadium in Conroe.

Earlier this week Conroe ISD officials pushed back the start of the game from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. due to predicted 100-degree plus temperatures Friday afternoon.

After lining up along North Thompson Street, the Conroe High administrators, alumni, student athletes, student groups, football players, Golden Girls and Conroe Tiger Band marched through the streets of downtown Conroe leading to a pep rally at Heritage Place Park.

“I’ve been here six years and this is the first time I’ve got to experience the homecoming parade downtown. From the first year I was here, I’ve heard about it (the tradition of the parade in downtown),” said Conroe head football coach Cedric Hardeman.

To close out the pep rally, Hardeman requested each person there bring four or five people to Friday night’s game to pack the stadium.

“I want to sellout both the home and visitors side. I want it to be as loud as it has ever been,” he said.

Also prior to the homecoming game, a rededication of Buddy Moorhead football stadium at Conroe High School will take place just prior to the start of the game.

Moorhead was a beloved Conroe High football coach who died in June 1983 after a heart attack at his home.

On Saturday morning, the Conroe High School Alumni Breakfast is at 9 a.m. at the Pit Gym at Conroe High School. All classes are invited to attend with a light breakfast being provided by Pie in the Sky. Tickets are $10 each. The breakfast is hosted by the Class of 1983 and will honor the Buddy Moorhead family.
