The Conroe Covenant Cougars forced a fourth down incomplete pass on Abilene Christian’s final drive of the night to capture its first state title in program history, 80-76, in the TAPPS Division II 6-man championship.
According to Lone Star Christian Sports Network, the Cougars (13-1) and Panthers (11-3) played the highest-scoring TAPPS 6-man state championship game ever with 156 total points scored.
The Cougars reached the state semifinals in 2021 and 2022 before finally breaking through last week when it defeated Pasadena First Baptist Christian.
Cougars quarterback Jackson Rudy ran in 10 touchdowns while totaling 305 yards on 23 attempts. He also threw a touchdown pass to Colby VanBruane.
Jackson was 19-for-28 passing for 212 yards. Charlie Wade led with 87 yards while VanBruane had 56 and Keaton Campbell totaled 45 yards.Â
VanBruane had 14 tackles while Matthew Zepada and Joshua DeRamus had eight tackles and an interception.
While Covenant was playing its first state championship game, this was the Panthers’ sixth ever appearance. They won four straight games coming into the night.
