During a July 10 meeting, Conroe City Council awarded a $4.6 million contract to SLI Group for the design and build of Fire Station No. 8, which will be located in the southeast portion of the city.

What this means

SLI Group will lead design and construction efforts over the next 13 months, and Conroe Fire Chief Paul Sims said the facility is scheduled for occupancy in mid-August 2026.

“We are out of space at other fire stations, and we have as many as five or six reserve apparatus, engines and a ladder truck, and we need the extra space with that,” Sims said.

The contract does not include equipment and furniture, and the fire station will house four firefighters, a battalion chief and a brush truck, Sims said.

How we got here

Sims began negotiations with SLI Group after the council approved the request for qualifications for design and build services at its April 24 meeting, as previously reported.

Originally, the station was slated to close upwards of $7 million, Mayor Duke Coon said. Sims said there is a total of $2.6 million in savings.

“I know this [Fire] Station [No.] 8 has been on the books here for a long time,” Coon said. We weren’t going to settle for $7.2 million.”

The new fire station will be located along FM 3083, according to city officials.
