Virginia-based CarMax is pushing back its construction start date a year for its new $5.2 million Conroe site as the used car retailer works to enhance the design of the facility for better efficiency.
The Conroe Industrial Development Corp. board approved the construction and development plans for the project Feb. 16.
During the board’s Aug. 10 meeting, it agreed to the new date. The company is expected to begin construction in April 2025.
The city closed on the 40 acres in the Conroe Park North Industrial Park in April. The facility will span more than 8,600 square feet.

“CarMax’s planned location in Conroe is a reconditioning center focused on renewing vehicles up to CarMax standards,” said Jennifer Bartusiak, public relations manager for the company. “The facility will provide incremental reconditioning capacity for the local market. It will also have a dealer-only auction facility.”
Executive Director of the Conroe Economic Development Council Danielle Scheiner said the company was not seeking any variances to building requirements in the park.
She said the company was meeting all the requirements for the city.
“There are going to be two buildings,” Scheiner said. “There is an office in a smaller building and the larger building will actually be the service center. The rest of the property will be outside storage parking of the vehicles to be auctioned.”
According to information from CarMax, auctions are for buyers of licensed dealerships. Auctions are held weekly and offer online bidding.
