Recently, the Thomas Jefferson Stubbs 2523 Conroe Chapter of the Texas Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, received a picture and short article from former chapter member Renee Mauch. She and her husband, Loy, had been in the United Kingdom on “holiday”. While in Liverpool, England, they located the gravesite of James Dunwoody Bulloch and they placed a Confederate flag at his grave. Bulloch served as the first Confederate Special Agent, joining the Confederacy in 1861.
Bulloch was born near Savannah, Georgia on 25 June 1823. While in Liverpool, he led a group of agents and they secured monies for many Confederate Navy vessels. After the war ended, he stayed in England, he died the 7th of January 1901 in Liverpool and is buried at the Toxtech Park Cemetery. An account of Bulloch’s service to the Confederacy can be found in a two volumn work titled…”THE SECRET SERVICE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES IN EUROPE”.
The article and picture was featured in the May/June 2025 issue of The Confederate Veteran.
Ms. Mauch is a member of the Hot Springs 80 Chapter, Hot Springs, Arkansas Division, UDC and is currently their chapter President. Loy Mauch is a member of the James M. Keller Camp #648, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
