The holiday is behind us and the new Rotary year has begun. New Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally has chosen “Create Hope In The World” as the theme for the 2023-24 Rotary year.

He urges all Rotarians to “Create hope in the world by working for peace and mental wellbeing. (I) urge members to engage in tough conversations and earn the trust that’s necessary to realize these values.” Our local clubs have installed their new officers, thanked the outgoing boards for their service, and are now ready to work diligently all year to create that hope in the world. This certainly isn’t a new idea in Rotary; creating hope is part of what we try to do day in and day out as we serve our communities. But as with all good things, a visual reminder of goals and our mission is always a blessing.

The Rotary Club of Lake Conroe has big news to begin the year. The club will move from an evening club to a luncheon club, and will also change from a weekly meeting to a first and third Tuesday schedule. Any month with a 5th Tuesday will find the club hosting either an evening social or a service project. The club will continue to meet at Amore Seafood and Fine Dining on 14860 Texas 105 in Montgomery. The new gathering time is 11:30 a.m. to allow members and guests to order their lunch, and then the meeting will run from noon to 1 p.m.

The club’s first luncheon meeting will be this week on Tuesday, July 11, (to offset not meeting on the 4th) and then the club will meeting again on the 3rd Tuesday to begin the new 1st and 3rd schedule. We all wish RCLC the best of luck as they transition into a new schedule, which always creates a little confusion whilst everyone gets into the swing of things. Just as an FYI, the meeting times and locations for the other local clubs all remain the same at this time.

Family of Rotary. We send our heartfelt sympathies to RCC Past President Denny Buckalew and his family on the passing of his dad, Don Buckalew Sr. “Big D,” an affectionate nickname for a giant of a man in this community, was nothing short of a legend. Buckalew’s accomplishments were many and for decades he has been involved in so many important projects and organizations that have made our community such a great place to live. He also created a family of like-minded individuals, each and every one of whom has made a mark on Montgomery County. Godspeed sir.

We also wish to thank the many readers who reached out regarding our column last week about Peter Wakefield. Peter and his family are grateful. Typical of Peter and his wonderful dry wit, he told me I would need “a thick, thick prayer rug when you go to confession after writing that article and saying such nice things about me.” What a smile that put on our faces! Thank you Peter for being your amazing self. We keep you in our prayers.
