Wow, wow and hubba hubba! The response to our request for donations for our Heroes in Hawaiian Shirts (www.hawaiianshirtsfordeployedsoldiers.org) has been so heartwarming.

Last week at GuadalaHarry’s, before we had even completed the setup of our collection area – a Christmas sleigh! – the first shirt was donated. Thank you so much handsome bartender!

We’ve become quite enamored with the work this small but mighty nonprofit in South Carolina is doing for our brave young men and women overseas. Since 2017, the charity has sent more than 50,000 bright and beautiful new and gently used Hawaiian shirts overseas to deployed units of our military. It’s “just” a shirt you might thing, but as we’ve learned there is no “just” in the world of helping others. Every kind word, every dollar, every volunteer hour is an important one.

If you have shirts you’d like to donate, or if you’d just like to check out our club and see what Parrot Head Clubs are about, we invite you to join us on Sunday, July 27th at GuadalaHarry’s in downtown Conroe for our “Christmas in July” Party. The fun begins at 4 p.m. and runs until Harry and Debbie have had enough of us. Entertainment by Florida musician John McDonald, including Christmas tunes from his new “Floribbean” style CD. There’s no cover, but we’d appreciate your generosity in tipping John to help us pay his fees. We’ll be upstairs in their great party room. It’s sure to be a super fun, casual afternoon – and family friendly too. The young ones love our music and atmosphere. Tropical Christmas attire encouraged – there will be prizes.

If you can’t make the party, the donation drop spot will remain at the restaurant through party night. Extra points if you happen to have – or can find at a local resale shop – Christmas Hawaiian shirts. This donation will reach the soldiers just as the holiday season is approaching. Kinda special, don’t you think?

In other 5OCP news, Our Pink Flamingo Happy Hour in June (also at GuadalaHarry’s – yes, we love this spot!) was a great success. Music was by “The Godfather” of Trop Rock music, Jerry Diaz and his band The Reef, including a crazy fun air guitar challenge – you had to be there! We raised $1,000 from our raffle for The Alzheimer’s Associations The Longest Day Campaign. We were jazzed.

Our 4th of July weekend included a gathering of the Phlock at the backyard paradise of club members Kitty and Jamie Nolan with music by Robert Greaney, a club favorite. There were poolside games and lots of yummy food. The atmosphere was a little subdued from prior years, as news of the devastation from the Central Texas floods was just beginning to sink in. We continue to send our love, light and prayers to all affected by this unfathomable tragedy.
