Amid a sea of bright colors and twinkling lights, a room full of Parrot Heads and guests celebrated “Christmas in July” with laughter, dancing, and of course, a purpose for the party. What a great afternoon it was!

The upstairs party room at GuadalaHarry’s – a perfect spot for such affairs – was filled with 4 foot pop up Christmas trees in a rainbow of colors, along with banners and signs touting the fun of a hot, hot, hot summer Christmas in Texas. Trop Rock musician John McDonald entertained us with his just released Christmas CD, a collection of lighthearted tunes in his signature “Floribbean” style, plus lots of deep cut Buffett tunes and soft rock favorites. As usual, Harry’s staff was top notch and attentive, and the food and drinks were spot on.

A night with Parrot Heads usually includes a conga line dance around the room, often to the music of Jimmy Buffett’s classic “Volcano”. But for this party, John did a super-cool mash up of Christmas tunes that included Jingle Bells, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, and more. Party games took on a distinctive Christmas in the Caribbean feel with an antler ring toss game and a new club favorite, the Kleenex box/ping pong ball booty shake game. Ya really had to be there! The young ones were included in the fun, with lots of grandkids on hand enjoying the beach balls scattered under the Christmas trees. What a joyous night it was!

On to that purpose for the party – aside from a great night of PHun and PHellowship, of course. Our chosen charity for the month of July was the collection of Hawaiian Shirts for the nonprofit Hawaiian Shirts for Deployed Soldiers. Since 2017, this small but mighty organization has collected more than 50,000 colorful shirts that were sent to American soldiers deployed all over the world, many in war torn, dangerous areas. What may seem like a small thing is truly something much more special – bringing smiles and joy to those awesome young men and women protecting us. Each shirt is accompanied by a thank you card, or in our case, a photo collage from our event with signs of support and caring. To learn more about this charity, see their website at www.hawaiianshirtsfordeployedsoldiers.org

The following night our Board of Directors and our Jamm Band members hosted a song swap and sing along evening with John and his lovely lady Donna, to thank them for hanging out with us and helping us many Christmas in July a special night. So special in fact that we’ve already decided to do it again next year!
