“Service above Self” is a never-ending theme behind what Rotarians do. Each day in the life of a Rotarian is based on what can that Rotarian contribute to his/her community and how their community can be served. We know that a community who has its needs met is a happy, more vibrant community. We know that a well-fed community is important. That is why Rotarians work closely with food organizations. For instance, the Rotary Club of Conroe periodically fills decorated breakfast bags for seniors that are fed via Meals on Wheels.
Some of us are artistically inclined and like me being an engineer are definitely artistically impoverished. My decorated bags always get a good morning start with words with art definitely lacking. Rotarians have packed plastic-sealed bags with raw legumes and other food basics to feed families in “third-world” countries. The Rotary Club of Lake Conroe in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Conroe fill TP rolls with hard candies and wraps them for distribution to rural children in Mexico.
The five Rotary Clubs in Conroe also work closely with the Montgomery County Food Bank to distribute food to food-needy families of Veterans. We provide 15-20 volunteers from the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County, Rotary Club of Magnolia, Rotary Club of Lake Conroe, Rotary Club of The Woodlands, and Rotary Club of Conroe. In addition Rotarians like Roger Goertz of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands volunteer on an ongoing basis at the Montgomery County Food Bank’s facilities to help package foods and living essentials for easy distribution to those less fortunate in our community. There is something about serving that brings an inner peace to your soul and the satisfaction that you are doing an unselfish task in helping others less fortunate than you. When you as a human being contribute in this unselfish approach to serving your community, your inner self is built up with a satisfying peace knowing that the world is a little bit better because you cared to serve.
Magnify that service by the million plus Rotarians in the world to amplify a small task into the combined aggregated small tasks of individual Rotarians into a much larger force in the world. It is all about “Service above Self.” We as Rotarians can help to make a difference in our communities. Let us unite in service by becoming a Rotarians. The Rotary Club of Conroe is hosting a membership drive for the rest of September and into October. The Club invites you to attend its weekly meetings held on Tuesdays at noon at the Honor Café. Check out Rotary and what we do to serve.
The Rotary Club of The Woodlands is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of service to The Woodlands Community and the world. This Club has grown to become the largest Rotary Club in Montgomery County. They have provided graduating seniors over a million dollars in college scholarships. They have mentoring programs in the local schools. They also teach high school students the values of Rotary in Interact Clubs which is a Rotary Service organization on the high school level at all of the local high schools in The Woodlands, Oak Ridge North and Spring.
