Rotarians have so much to be thankful for. We show our gratitude in serving our community, country and the world.

We start our weekly meetings in prayer and then honor the flags of the United States and Texas. It is this weekly acknowledgment of these priorities to serve and respect our creator, country and state. We recognize these wonderful blessings and join others in our community as we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Rotary Clubs in Montgomery County will not be meeting this week since this entire week is time off from schools for our children and grandchildren. This becomes a week for family and friends to celebrate all that we have which we are so grateful for.

I invite you to join Rotarians this Thanksgiving at the Salvation Army Center at 304 Avenue E in Conroe in preparing a full Thanksgiving Meal and helping with the distribution. What I find gratifying is serving these meals to those who come to the Salvation Army Center to eat. There will be a large tent in the rear parking lot to host those who need a place to enjoy this meal. I find it interesting to sit down with those eating to hear their stories and to acknowledge their situation. This simple act of kindness elevates their self-esteem and establishes self-worth in people, especially those with very little.

Although Rotarians do not have any official meetings during Thanksgiving week, all are invited to attend a “Lunch and Learn” about those brave souls in Ukraine battling to keep their basic freedoms. This event is this Tuesday starting at 11:30 at Honor Café. Three Ukrainian Servicemen will be there to talk about their beloved Country and what is being done to preserve their Democratic Nation. Deputy Brigade Commander for Combat Training, 3rd Assault Brigade Kyrylo Berkal, Lt. Colonel Dmytro Kurcharchuk of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Assault Brigade, and Combat Medic Crew Commander Oleg Magdych will provide you their perspectives of what is happening in their country.

These three have experienced the assault of the Russians who want to take their freedoms away. I hope to see you there to learn more about their fight to preserve their freedoms.

Rotarians are so grateful for many things with freedom being one of those rights that we want to preserve. Freedom is not free. We have many to thank for contributing their all in order that we have freedom. Thousands have died to preserve that freedom. Many more have gone to fight to preserve our freedoms and have returned with demons to torment them for the rest of their lives.

We have celebrated Veterans Day and give our thanks and gratitude for all who have kept us free. We are about to celebrate a bountiful harvest and be thankful for what we have. Please join Rotarians and others as we celebrate and give thanks for the bounties that our Creator has bestowed upon us. A grateful nation is a humble, but strong nation!

The Rotary Club of Conroe meets on Tuesdays at noon at Honor Cafe in downtown Conroe.
