This weekend marks the end of summer and the beginning of the cooler days of autumn. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September as a day to commemorate the labors of American workers. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of those who labored before us to transition to 40-hour weeks, paid holidays, and paid vacations.

Rotarians reflect and act with service for those in our community, nation, and the world. For instance, the Rotary Club of Conroe during its noon meeting on Tuesday at Honor Café will work on Breakfast Bags for seniors participating in the Meals on Wheels program. Brown paper bags will be decorated with morning greetings and filled with food and snacks for our seniors. The Rotary Club of The Woodlands has begun their mentoring programs in the elementary schools in The Woodlands. Over thirty Rotarians in this Rotary Club have signed up to mentor school kids at risk. This program has been managed each year by Natalie Saikowski Goertz. Natalie is our oldest daughter and a legacy with her husband Roger in Rotary. It’s a family affair in Rotary. The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County provides to all of the elementary schools emergency undergarment bags in case of “emergencies.” The Rotary Club of Magnolia is organizing their annual Nature Fair to be held in November around the State’s official Arbor Day. This youth-oriented event will be held at the Magnolia ISD School Complex on the south side of FM 1488. This event focuses on a variety of opportunities to explore our local nature and environment. The Rotary Club of Lake Conroe will hold their annual candy roll wrapping. Empty TP rolls are collected and used to fill with hard candies, then wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper for young children in Mexico. This is a fun-filled opportunity for Rotarians and their families to provide some fun and love to kids in low income areas in Mexico.

Rotarians provide an extension of Rotary in high schools with Interact Clubs. These Interact Clubs are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs in The Woodlands, Conroe, and East Montgomery County. Under the guidance of local Rotarians and school sponsors, these Interact Clubs learn about service to community, country, and the world. These independent Clubs establish their internal organization structure just like Rotary Clubs. They plan their service projects just like Rotary Clubs, and they plan their fund-raising efforts just like Rotary Clubs. For Rotary and these Interact Clubs, the focus is on service, living fundamental values established by Rotary, and having fun as a service organization. If you are interested in becoming a part of this service organization, the Rotary Club of Conroe is sponsoring a member drive thru the months of September and October. Membership Committee Chair, Michael Hayes, has a goal of eleven new members.

The Rotary Club of Conroe meets at noon on Tuesdays at Honor Café in case you want to check out Rotary.
