The Montgomery County Memorial Library System has launched a new ePopUp program to promote library service in unexpected places around the county.

In waiting rooms and every day business locations such as clinics, nail salons and restaurants around the county, a simple library sign and a little QR code helps give participants a taste of the library’s collection of titles and an opportunity to try out something new.

“The ePopUp gives people a taste of the library and encourages them to come into a local branch for a library card and access to more titles,” said Anne Neidinger with public relations and program coordinator for the library system. “Currently, we’ve targeted a lot of waiting rooms in clinics and hospitals including the NICU at Memorial Hermann, Interfaith clinics, NextLevel and Lone Star Family Health Center clinics. We’ve also partnered with the USO for their airport locations, and placed signage at a family shelter, a hair salon and multiple senior living communities. We continue to make plans to reach out to places where waiting is an opportunity to share the library and continue our mission of promoting literacy in the community.”

The QR code is displayed in about 25 locations across the county currently. The collection has a featured books section and fiction, non-fiction, teens, children sections. When readers click on the book they would like to read, it gives an age suggestion for the book, the number of pages and a synopsis of the book.

This new library system tool gives the public access to a special collection of titles found in Montgomery County libraries. Showcasing the ebooks through a quick registration portal and mini digital library, users can browse the ePopUp selections and choose what to read.

The ePopUp is for those people who may not know about the library system or do not have a library card. This sampling — books that may be checked out for 14 days — also encourages people to then come to their local library branch for more titles and to obtain a library card.

The ePopUp platform, created by the company Baker and Taylor, can be accessed by scanning a QR code. The library system partners with Baker and Taylor to help share the library’s digital collection with other partner locations in your community for instant access to digital content on any mobile phone, tablet or computer.

Founded in 1948, the MCMLS celebrates literacy all year long through fun, educational programs for children, teens, and adults, and by the more than 2.5 million items circulated. Since then, it has grown to serve nearly 400,000 library patrons and cardholders in seven branches countywide.

The library system has a variety of programs and events taking place in December. See the system’s December newsletter for more library happenings.
