Antiques appraiser and award-winning media personality Lori Verderame known as “Dr. Lori” will bring her keen eye and sharp wit to Conroe Sept. 7.

Her Dr. Lori’s Antiques Appraisal Comedy Show is a part of the fall Montgomery County Home & Outdoor Living Show Sept. 7-8 at the Lone Star Convention Center.

Here’s what to know about her appearance in Conroe and how local residents can have an item appraised by the famed appraiser:

COUNTY HOSPITAL TRANSFORMATION: Former Montgomery County Hospital transformed into senior living community

What to know about Dr. Lori

Verderame said she grew up as a young kid in Connecticut around older people as her parents were older when they had her.

“Everything around me was always old. I was so much younger than everybody else. I thought I better figure out what’s going on so I became interested in history particularly in objects as they show you what history is all about,” she said.

Her father was a collector who would bring things in and her mother on the other hand was always throwing stuff out.

Verderame would always try to get a look at whatever the item was before it left the house to see if it was important or not.

“I guess I was always destined to be an appraiser,” she said.

Verderame graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in world history. She followed that up with a masters degree from Wesleyan University and a doctorate in art and architectural history from Pennsylvania State University. She’s also been an educator and museum curator.

Educational and entertaining

She has presented her Dr. Lori’s Antiques Appraisal Comedy Show for 25 years. In the show she travels in the United States and overseas appraising items in a live show that mixes education and humor.

Her work has been featured in shows on Netflix, the History Channel, Discover TV and others and she has a very popular YouTube page where she dishes on the tips and tricks of appraising an item.

Presenting more than 150 events every year and conducting in-home appraisal visits, Verderame reviews approximately 20,000 items a year. In addition to her live shows, she can be contacted through her website.

‘Everything is better in Texas’

The New England native said is always excited by the Lone Star State shows.

“Everything is better in Texas. Texas really lives up to all the hype,” she said. “The collectors are more dedicated to preserving objects and the history of Texas comes alive. Texas is a lot of fun always. We always see interesting objects like Astros memorabilia or something related to the Alamo.”

What to expect

Her shows are 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 7.

Visitors to the show can bring an heirloom, antique or thrift store find to the show to be appraised for free. One item may be appraised per person.

She suggests arriving early to get a good seat in the theater-style seating. She works from the front of the audience to the back of the audience. Audience members are asked to bring their object forward and place it on a table on the stage and she comments on each object throughout the show.

She’ll also talk about how to resell the object, how to hand it down to relatives, preserving the object and more.
