Musical influences and Woodlands ties

Both Lil JSean and his sister, Aesja, are musicians who attended high school in The Woodlands.

They’ve loved music since they were young children, listening to old cassette tapes and going to concerts with their parents.

Lil JSean was born in Birmingham, Alabama and has lots of family there. He spent the first half of his life in Maryland though.

The Deep South musical influences fused with his exposure to northern music artists to influence his future musical taste.

The family ended up in the Houston suburbs where he said College Park allowed him to be himself and people seemed drawn to him because of his rapping skills.

“I knew I wanted to be a rapper when I started free styling for fun,” he said. He and his sister started making YouTube videos after discovering the programs GarageBand and iMovie on the Mac computer they’d received from their parents in 2009.

Neither has stopped making music since. They collaborated on the song “Trust ‘Em,” featured on Lil JSean’s “Yellow Tape” EP in 2016.

Everyday life as a theme

He raps about his everyday life including fashion, friendship highs and lows or his day. He said it’s a stream of consciousness almost like journaling.

“I’m myself fully and I’m not trying to be another type of artist that was seen before. I lean into what makes me different, like I’m a vegan and I take care of my body,” he said.

For the show, he saw a casting call through a Houston radio host on Instagram. There were no details on the show, he just knew they were seeking rappers for a major streaming network.

He took a chance and it was a five-month long casting process. At the end of that time he learned the name of the show and that he’d be flown to Atlanta along with 77 other rappers.

Twenty nine rappers made the cut to be on the show.

“It was a really awesome experience. Me being able to connect with the cast members was everything. Even the cast members who didn’t make the show I was able to create a bond with them as well,” he said.

He has a song coming out with one of the contestants Detroit Diamond. It’s a remix of “Poppin'” by Chris Brown and it releases Friday on music streaming sites and his social media.

“I want to inspire people that they can be themselves fully. They don’t have to go along with the social norms of anything. You can be yourself fully and still win at the end of the day,” he said.
