The Players Theatre Company in downtown Conroe will begin the new year with a new Artistic Director.
Earlier this month, leadership from the theater group announced Joe Folsom as the new artistic director.
He follows previous artistic director Joe Viser, veteran actor and director for The Players Theatre Company in Conroe for 52 years, who stepped down from his roles within the group at the end of March. He was artistic director for 16 years.
“A native Texan as well as an accomplished actor, director, writer, designer and musician, Joe has been professionally involved in the theater since 2000. His work has been on stage in New York, Chicago, Dallas and across North Texas,” according to an announcement from The Players.

About The Players Theatre Company
The Players Theatre Company began in 1967 as The Little Theatre of Conroe and produced shows on the Conroe High School stage and then in a former plumbing supply store at the corner of Galveston and Robertson streets in Conroe.
In 1979, the group helped to clean and restore The Crighton Theatre where it operated for nearly 30 years as The Crighton Players. In 2008, the theater moved into its current residence at The Owen Theatre.
About new artistic director Joe Folsom
On Sunday, The Players hosted a Zoom forum interviewing Folsom.
Folsom was born and raised in Garland, Texas and became interested in theater in high school. He made his professional debut around age 18 or 19.
“I decided pretty quickly that’s what I wanted to do with my life. Not just acting or directing, I enjoy all the aspects of theater,” he said. “I feel it’s something that offers the ability to connect with your community and enrich your community’s culture and has the ability to bring us together despite our differences.”
He attended college at the University of North Texas. He’s currently in a show in Colorado and leads classes in Dallas.
He also has credits on and off camera in multiple television shows and commercials as well as films including “Better Call Saul,” “Camera Store,” “Dallas,” “American Crime,” “Revolution,” “Snitch,” and others.
He served as producer and artistic director for The Classics Theatre Project, Upstart Productions, Broken Gears Project Theatre and Sundown Collaborative Theatre. As an educator who enjoys creating with artists of all ages, he developed The Practical Acting Program.
“My goal is to spend a lot of time when I first land listening to people who have worked with The Players, people who have seen shows there and who have never seen shows there and why? What drives them and what draws them in?” he said.
