The Players Theatre Company opens the 2024-25 season with the story of a small-town girl, a city boy and the rockers of Los Angeles trying to save the Sunset Strip in the 1980s.

The theater group opens the five-time Tony nominated musical “Rock of Ages” Sept. 6 at the Owen Theatre, 225 Metcalf Street, in downtown Conroe. Shows continue weekends through Sept. 22.

Here is what to know about the show and how to go:

NEW WATER FEES: Conroe adopts water fee for apartment customers to generate $6M for city’s infrastructure needs

Synopsis

The musical is built around classic rock songs from the 1980s with music from the bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and Europe and more.

Lonny Barnett, played by Robben Montez, serves as narrator for the musical version. He helps out owner Dennis Dupree with the Bourbon Room, a club on the strip in the late 1980s.

A pair of German developers, Hertz Klinemann and his son Franz, persuade the city’s mayor to abandon the baudy lifestyle of the Sunset Strip and introduce “clean living” into the area which includes demolishing the Bourbon Room. Amongst the music and action, small-town girl Sherrie Christian and city boy Drew Boley fall in love.

The musical was turned into a film in 2012 starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Julianne Hough.

Director and cast

The musical is directed by Conroe theater veteran Cricket Pepper.

Pepper graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas with a bachelors degree in dance choreography and performance. She has been in many shows in Conroe but her favorite roles to date include playing Doralee in “9 to 5 the Musical” from Stage Right, Miss Trunchbull in “Matilda the Musical” and Mona in “Chicago” both at The Players Theatre Company.

Connor Evers plays good-guy rocker Drew. The Porter High grad began exploring theater in high school and played his first role with The Players in “SpongeBob The Musical” as Patrick Starr.

He said playing Drew is a dream role and he gets the unique opportunity to work with his dad Mitch’s band TailorMaide on stage. The group will perform all the 80s songs live during the performances.

Mitch is typically the lead singer, but here son Connor takes over vocals for the group with the rest of the cast. The musical is special to him because he grew up listening to his dad play music in bands and they saw “Rock of Ages” in Houston as things were beginning to reopen in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conroe vocal artist Meredith Fisk plays spunky Sherrie. She has recently been in “Into the Woods,” “Brightstar” and “School of
Rock” in Conroe.

Other roles include Mike Kilgore as Dennis, Shananda Poulos as Justice, Alicia Allen as Regina, Scott Allison as Hertz, Jonathon Duttweiler as Franz and Colton Land as Stacee Jaxx.

LAKE CONROE LOW WATER: Trash and silt have turned a Lake Conroe cove into a ‘shallow mud pit.’ Residents want state help.
