These are the dog days of summer. The extreme temperatures this summer have everything to do with the tilt of the earth toward the sun, causing the sun’s rays to strike the Northern Hemisphere more directly for a longer period of time. The earth slightly wobbles as it rotates, thus shifting the plane … and this year it seems to have shifted slightly forward. The phrase “Dog Days of Summer” stems from the fact dogs tend to be a bit on the lazy side during the hottest days of summer. What’s your dog doing right now? But rest assured, Conroe Noon Lion members are still finding ways to make a difference.
We held their summer blood drive, ‘Saving Lives is Sweet’ with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center on Wednesday at the Lone Star Convention Center. Nearly all the possible open spots for blood donations were filled with Lion members and friends. One of our own, Lion Mike Medved recently had surgery and was a recipient of donated blood. Thanks to all those that gave, it matters and thank you to CNLC Chairman Aaron Denton for a successful blood drive.
CNLC and Conroe ISD-Reaves Elementary School have partnered once again to provide school supplies for the 2023-24 calendar year. The club will be making donations along with the B.E. Blessed Foundation, led by 12-year-old Baily Cowart. Baily was a recent guest speaker at the club, and she will be bringing 80 fully equipped backpacks from her foundation. Committee Chairwomen Helen Thornton advised the CNLC will be bringing a “truck load” of school supplies, thanks to all who contributed.
This week our featured guest was Game Warden Geoff Rogers with the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Game Warden Rogers offered some insight into the primary functions of TPWD, hunting & fishing enforcement. There are less than 500 Game Wardens in the State of Texas, which includes 340 Field Agents. Of the 256 Counties in the State of Texas, Montgomery County has four Game Wardens patrolling our lakes and State parks. As part of Operation Lone Star, Game Wardens also rotate to the Southern boarder every other month. Agent Rogers has been with the TPWD for three years after serving in the Marine Corps for 8 years and we are proud to have him here in Montgomery County.
We are saddened by the passing of another CNLC monarch, PDG James M. Stewart, who passed away on Aug. 2. Lion James served CNLC continuously since 1969 and served in many club offices and was club President in 1976. He was recognized as Lion of the Year twice, in 1974 and 29 years later in 2003, he was the epitome of a Lion servant.
The Community Partnership Program initiative will conclude on Sept. 1. This once-a-year contribution plan entitles you to various events throughout the year, including our annual golf tournament, clay shot, lucky derby tickets, the Legend of the Lion Dinner/Dance and more. There are four levels of partnership from $2,500 to $500 each with its own varying number of amenities. Our wonderful Community Partners are the supporters of all our community and charity projects. You too can help us help others by contacting 1st Vice President Bryan Rennell or the club office for additional information.
