This past week’s meeting started with a heartfelt prayer by Lion Raymond McDonald thanking the Lord for the peace surrounding the recent national election and for all of those public servants here and around the world who risk their lives to protect our nation and its citizens.

Then, we heard from three outstanding high school seniors who read their essay entries in the Texas Lions Clubs annual Outstanding Youth Contest: Iman Mahmood and Isaac Zinn, both from Conroe High School, and Andrew Chandler, from Covenant Christian School.

The essay topic for this year is A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).  Each student read their final product to the Club explaining how A.I. works and how it will affect us in the future.  They expect many jobs to be lost to A.I.  But, they each also predict many new jobs will be created by the advances in productivity that will come about by the expansion of A.I. First place went to Isaac Zheng, who also happens to be the Vice-President of the Leo Club sponsored by the Conroe Noon Lions Club. Each of these students was awarded $1,500 and an additional $1,500 will be awarded to the winner who represents the club at the District competition.

Thank you Lion Byron Stewart who chaired the committee that reviewed and interviewed all of the contestants.  We Lions were the winners because we got to listen to these talented future leaders and learn from them.  Contact Lion Hannah Medley if you have a high-school-aged student who might want to join the Leo Club.

Lion John Stacy announced the annual “Lucky Derby” car raffle we call the “Giddy-up Give Away.” This program began many years ago when “Lion for Life,” Don Buckalew, led the effort by helping the grand prize award become a brand-new vehicle from Buckalew Chevrolet!  Yippie!! The raffle consists of only 700 tickets for $100 each.  There are also three other major prizes, and 24 additional prizes awarded to the winners at the drawing held in December.  The money raised goes to support the many programs undertaken by the Lions Club.  Contact any club member to get your raffle ticket.

Speaking of programs, as you know a major goal of Lions Clubs is to improve the sight of those in the Conroe area and around the world.  In that vein, the Club held a volunteer work night last week where more than 20 Lions came to the Eyeglass Recycling Center to sort, clean, and repair eyeglasses to be given to those in need.  In addition, at our Community Assistance Center vision screening last week had more than 20 individuals, which resulted in 17 referrals for vision assistance.  Way to Go Lions!

There are two “Lions of the Month” who shared the honor for October!  Diane Hohman was recognized for her hard work during our Service Saturday programs.  Jeannette Mihelich was recognized for all of her hours of devotion conducting vision screenings for adults and children.  Thank you and Congratulations Lady Lions!  Another thanks to Lion Andrew Perry, and his seven Lion helpers, who organized last week’s Service Saturday to help an elderly person get her property cleaned up and safe.

Please join us any Wednesday at noon.  The food is good, and fellowship is great!  The Conroe Noon Lions Club meets on Wednesdays, at noon, at the Lone Star Convention Center.  For more information about the Conroe Noon Lions Club, please visit our website, www.conroenoonlions.org, or call the club office at 936-760-1666.
