The Conroe Noon Lions Club was blessed this week with an opening prayer by Justice of the Peace and Lion Wayne Mack who pointed out how truly blessed we are to live and work in Conroe and Montgomery County at this time in history. It wouldn’t be a Lions meeting without recognizing the outstanding service to the community given by our members.  Pat District Governor, Lion Paul Moore presented Past President, Lion Jason Miller, with the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for outstanding service to Lions Clubs International.  Melvin Jones was the founder of Lions Clubs International which was begun on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois.

Lion Jason Miller wasn’t the only Lion winning awards this week.  Our program was presented this week by Lion Bill Thompson who is the President of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra.  Along with him was Gary Liebst, the Conductor of the Orchestra.  Conductor Liebst explained that the Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer player, non-paid, Orchestra that was established in 1997.

This year, the Symphony will present a new program on October 19th, at 2:30 p.m., at the Conroe First United Methodist Church.  The theme for this concert will be “Tunes From The Tunes”!  Conductor Liebst said most of the cartoons produced by Disney, Warner Brothers, and other studios decades ago used the classical compositions of the old masters as the background music for the cartoons (think of “Bugs Bunny” and “Elmer Fudd”).  Concert tickets are available at their website: conroesymphony.org.  Speaking of Elmer Fudd, Lion Bill Thompson conducted a contest to see which Lion could do the best impression of Elmer Fudd hunting for “that rascal rabbit,” Bugs Bunny.  Lion Jake Freeman won first place with his robust rendition of Elmer Fudd hunting fiercely with chair and knife!

Lions care about eyesight!  Especially for our local children.  Lion Sharene Carr reported that our Club completed 45 screenings of children under the age of six to identify any eye problems or sight deficits in the past week.  The school and parents are notified if any problems are identified.  These screenings were completely free for the children and will continue through November.

This past Saturday, October 5th, we had the annual Clay Shoot fundraiser where guns were blazing, guns were auctioned, and guns were raffled off. I’m sure everyone had a blast but more to report on next week.

On October 19th, if you see a bunch of Lions at Lions park, don’t panic!  It’s just us conducting our Service Saturday project to clean up and fix up the park.  In addition, we will be dedicating the “Rob Hamilton” park bench named after our own Lion Rob Hamilton who received the bench from the City of Conroe.  Congratulations Rob!

Oh, by the way, you might also see a Lion this week with a blue t-shirt on that says, “Ask me to Roar”!  If so, take out your phone and take a video of them roaring for you to send to our club!  Your Lion friend will thank you!

And congratulations are in order for the Conroe Leo Club for the book drive it is conducting at Cryer Intermediate School in Conroe collecting books for special needs children.  Thank you Leos!
