Conroe Noon Lions are showing their “True Grit” as directed by our President’s motto for this year of service to our community and fellowship among Lions.  We have “Filled our hands” as John Wayne would command!  Lion teams filled their hands with; 1. Books to read to our Reaves Elementary students, 2. Fishing poles and picnic gear for the “kids on the lake” – fishing event for special needs children to catch a “whopper” 3. Phones and contact lists to nominate a Hometown Hero and 4. Raffle tickets and shooting gear for our annual Clay Shoot coming up on 5 October.

Brigadier General (ret)/Lion John Hafley reminded everyone that the deadline to nominate a local military personnel currently on active duty and perhaps serving overseas as our Hometown Hero of the year is Sept. 30.  We will shower that service member with lots of Lion love throughout the year, so they know how much their hometown appreciates them.  Christmas cards, care packages, and handmade Valentines from our Reaves school kids are just of few of the ways we say “Thank you for your service” to our Hometown Hero.

Second Vice President Sharene Carr reminded everyone of our ‘kids on the lake” – fishing tournament and thanks to a special VIP who will be serving in the dunking booth.  (Thanks President Bryan for being such great sport.)  Lion Philip Dupuis is spearheading the October 5th Clay Shoot and motivated everyone to get signed up either as a Community Partner participant, a shooter or as a Lion volunteer to make the competition a great success.  Blackwood Gun Club hosts the event every year with a fantastic facility and wonderful hospitality.

Lion Connie Engle thanked everyone who turned out for the recent CAC – Adult Vision Screening and encouraged everyone to join the team in the future for this fabulous service to our community.  She also reminded everyone that the annual Preschool Vision Screenings are about to start in October.  All Lions are encouraged to participate in this FUN & EASY program that impacts so many children’s lives for the better as yearly detection of vision issues are identified at nearly every outing.  Look at your Weekly Lion-Up for the best way to claim your spot on a team and go make a difference.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department/Wildlife Biologist Tristen Bryant spoke on Habitat Management and Game Management programs for Montgomery and Walker County.  He presented great information on the needs for habitat management in the growing housing developments in our area.  He discussed how landowners can make a huge difference for natural resource protection and wildlife while also enhancing the value of their land and development.  Landowner Incentive Programs can make a huge impact on the health of our migratory birds, endangered species and managing native wildlife.  (www.tpwd.state.tx.us/lip) He also stressed the impact that homeowners can make by keeping pet cats inside to protect birds and to select native landscaping plants to support local and migratory species.
