About the play
The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society from England finally has the funds and cast to mount a large-scale production of the (fictional) 1920s murder mystery, “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” Chris Bean, excited at his directorial debut, has spent more time, money, and resources on his set and costumes rather than on his onstage and backstage talent, and it shows as things, literally and figuratively, begin to fall apart. As every actor’s (and director’s) nightmare unfolds around them, they end up bringing the house down around them in the most real sense possible.
Veteran director
Sean K. Thompson, a 50-year stage veteran, directs here following up a leadership role in April’s “The Buddy Holly Story” at the Crighton Theatre.
In a turn of art imitating life, a lead actor Shawn Havranek in the Stage Right production experienced and injury and was unable to continue in the role. With weeks until opening curtain it was decided by the team that Thompson should also step into the role of Chris Bean.
“That’s what the production is about. It’s about a British troupe putting on a bad 1920s murder mystery. They couldn’t afford the Agatha Christie version so they got a bad script. They’re putting it on and things go wrong as the show progresses,” he said. “Literally the walls are coming down. It’s insanely funny and we all know that people can use a good laugh these days.”
The cast and crew
Justine Gray is assistant director and Cameron Collier is stage manager. Johnny Barton is the set designer. Other crew members are Cameron Collins, Bob Galley, Matthew Johnson, Nancy Eddleman and Lizzi Pineiro.
Chris Bean is the character of the director of the show within the show, “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” It’s his directorial debut and it shows Thompson said. He also plays Inspector Carter within the show.
“Audiences will love it just to see how the actors handle it when things start falling and breaking and they are forgetting. The theater world will love it because they can relate,” Thompson said.
Jono Rozas plays Robert/Thomas, Lauren Mulacek as Sandra/Florence, Ara Hollyday is Max/Cecil Haversham/Arthur the Gardener, Sherry Rozas is Annie/Stage Manager, Stephen Sampson is Jonathan, Bain Beason is Dennis and Carlos Soto is Trevor/the technician.
He encourages the audience to come to the show early, because things are already happening on stage before the show begins in the auditorium and in the lobby.
