The Autumnal Equinox – the beginning of fall – was this past weekend and October is just around the corner. And although Parrot Heads are known to be all about summer and bodies of water, we love October! Walks on the beach include a little breeze, the air is cooler, the fall foliage is beautiful, fire pits are lit, and not to be overlooked, some of our favorite fundraisers and special events are on our calendars for October. Party… meet Purpose – that works for us!
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Town Green Park in The Woodlands without a doubt is one of our favorite events of the year. Our 5OCPÂ PHC has a big presence at The Walk. We have a pink tent decorated in lots of Parrot Head finery and we have lots of goodies we give away. We’re been on the leader board as one of the top ten teams each yearand we’re pretty proud of that. We are at 90% of our goal for this year, with just over a month to go.Â
Last year, I was honored to represent “the purple flower” in the opening ceremonies. Each flower color in the Alzheimer’s Promise Garden has a special meaning. Purple indicates you’ve lost someone to Alzheimer’s; yellow is for caregivers, blue is someone living with some form of dementia; orange is a supporter. The newest flower, the white one, is the symbol of the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. No one carries the white flower yet, but we are ever so hopeful that we are very close. It is our beacon of hope. This year’s walk is on October 26th, later than usual because of the Woodland’s 50th anniversary celebrations earlier in the month. Come walk with us!Â
Another 5OCP favorite event is the SPCA*PETS*SNAP fundraising luncheon Doggies and Divas. Held annually in April Sound, the luncheon is an afternoon of fun and frivolity for such an important cause. There’s a style show that includes some adorable fur babies. Our 5OCP Vice President Marie Underdown is one of the organizers, our club donates auction items and a group of us are always in attendance. This year’s luncheon is on October 5th. The always lovely Hello Beautiful Boutique in Conroe will once again host a special breast cancer awareness day to benefit Faith Fighting Cancer, another of our Community Partners, on Saturday October 19th. Their “shopathon” is a pink-everywhere day that is such a celebration! FFC volunteers (including a few of our club members) are on hand to greet customers, there is a raffle and lots of fabulous clothes on sale. A portion of each sale goes to FFC too.Â
And, last but not least, our club will host our annual “SOCKtober” collection of new socks of all sizes and colors for the homeless and others needing a little extra help this fall and winter. Our eyes were opened last year when we partnered with Texas Children’s Hospital for this sock drive. Most of us probably don’t think about the difference a pair of warm socks can make on a chilly night, or to cushion feet in time worn shoes.
Our September Happy Hour is this Thursday the 26th at Pedro’s Tacos and Tequila Bar in Conroe. We will begin our “SOCKtober” collection that night, so bring a pair or two or twenty, and join us on the patio for some great music by local favorite Kevin Lamar. Â Come see what “Party For A Purpose” is really all about! Â
