The nonprofit Family Promise of Montgomery County will be one of the first community groups to host an event in the new Hyatt Regency Conroe that opened at the end of May.

The “Reach for Your Star” luncheon will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3.

Here are some things to know about the annual event.

What is Family Promise?

The nonprofit has a mission of serving families with children experiencing homelessness by uniting faith communities in a cooperative effort to provide shelter, meals, transportation and compassionate assistance that leads to independence.

The participants — many of whom are single mothers — enter a 90-day program which helps them make a plan for independence. Upon graduation, the participants are able to move into an apartment, have reliable transportation and maintain jobs that will support their families.

Family Promise center

In April 2022, the nonprofit opened a new 6,000-square-foot facility in Conroe. Previously, the families moved from host church to host church on a weekly basis. At the new center, they’re able to have both their administrative offices and common area, kitchen and bedrooms for the families in the same building.

One of executive director Marilyn Kasmiersky’s favorite parts of the program is that each child coming into the program gets to pick their own “bed in a bag” that they take with them. She said donations for the “bed in a bag” closet are always welcome. The group is always seeking volunteers.

About the Family Promise luncheon
