District 1 (North County) On Sept. 1, a deputy was notified of a disturbance in the 12700 block of Cook Road involving two intoxicated men. The deputy met with both men and a girlfriend of one of the men. One man said he had fired two shots from a shotgun at his friend after an argument. The second man took the shotgun away from the first man, and the argument continued. When the girlfriend of the second man arrived and attempted to take the shotgun from her boyfriend, he pointed the shotgun at her and threatened her with it. The two men, both age 22, one from Montgomery and one from Willis, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and transported to jail.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An anti-Islamic preacher backed off and then threatened to reconsider burning the Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, angrily accusing a Muslim leader of lying to him Thursday with a promise to move an Islamic center and mosque away from New York’s ground zero. The imam planning the center denied there was ever such a deal.

Suspects arrested in copper wire thefts

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with burglaries of electrical supply companies in Conroe.
Around 1:30 a.m. Sept. 5, Conroe Police responded to an alarm at HD Electric Supply, located in the 3500 block of N. Loop 336 West.
Officers arrested three male suspects in the process of removing coils and bundles of copper wire from the warehouse. An inventory valued the stolen items at approximately $14,000, said Sgt. Bob Berry, with the criminal investigations division of the Conroe Police Department.

2 men arrested after stealing woman's purse

Two Montgomery County residents were arrested Friday morning after stealing a purse from a woman's minivan while she was inside a convenience store.
Around 5 a.m. Friday, a 62-year-old woman was inside the Exxon convenience store at Gleneagle Drive and Texas 242. While she was inside the store, 26-year-old Jason Byford of Willis took her purse from her minivan and got into a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Michael Wayne Johnson Jr., of New Caney.

CISD board election slate set for Nov. 2

Eight candidates have filed for positions on the board of trustees for the Conroe Independent School District in the November elections.
Voters planning to have their say in the Nov. 2 school board election have until Oct. 4 to register.
Incumbent Mel Brown, a 69-year-old Conroe resident, is unopposed in Position 1.
There's some competition for Position 2, with four candidates running.

'Sextortion' cases on rise as cyber crimes

There's something new in the world of cyber crime.
The FBI calls it "sextortion."
"Basically, it's online sexual blackmail," said Cheryl Shaffer, a Houston FBI agent who spoke to a crowd of 80 recently during a session of Watch Talk Wednesday at The Woodlands Township. "I've got something on you and if you don't give me this or that, I'm going to send it to all your friends or I'm going to post this online about you."

Conroe mulls red-light camera expansion

A Conroe committee will study whether new red light cameras should be added to other intersections in the city.
Eight months after the city introduced a program to ticket red-light runners, the Conroe City Council is considering whether to add Loop 336 West at Plantation Drive to the list of intersection with camera to enforce the program.
That intersection would joins seven other intersections in the city where drivers could face a fine of $75 for running a red light.

Conroe sets budget at $99.6 million

The Conroe City Council passed a $99.6 million budget on Aug. 26 which will allow the city to hire four new employees and not raise taxes.
“The budget is a conservative plan to improve our community and our workplace while maintaining the current tax rate,” said Mayor Webb Melder in a letter to the council. “It includes money to replace vehicles and equipment, the addition of four new positions, and a moderate 5.35 percent adjustment to the sewer rate.”
